Welcome. This website examines the outdoors with a broad perspective from the vantage point of Abingdon. Located in the southwestern corner of Virginia, Abingdon is within a couple of hours of many outdoor opportunities in the Southeastern United States—primarily the Southern Appalachian Mountains in Virginia as well as in North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Abingdon itself and the immediately surrounding area provide some wonderful outdoor experiences, including the Virginia Creeper Trail.
The focus is outdoor sports, adventure, and culture. I will write some essays, put up some photography (particularly landscape photography), do some trip reports (from this area and beyond), discuss routes, and perhaps even do some interviews along the way. I will examine running, cycling, and other outdoor endurance sports as well as backpacking, hiking, paddling, fishing and the outdoors lifestyle in the region.
The goal is to provide some practical information and also some serious food for thought about the outdoors. I hope to keep things fresh and interesting. If you have any suggestions or comments, please don’t hesitate to provide them. Enjoy reading.
Hello Eric,
My wife (Deb) and I talked to you about cycling routes near Abingdon the other evening out in the street. Turns out we have someone in common…Mike Owens. You are his running, cycling, hiking and mtn. climbing buddy and we are renting his apartment for this week.
We rode your Maiden Creek Loop today and enjoyed it very much. In fact, I liked it so much I did it twice! Thanks again. One suggestion though, include road numbers in the description as not all roads have name signs.
I have included my photo website address if your interested in an outsider’s view of Abingdon.
Good luck on your next adventure!

Dennis and Deb,
I hope you enjoyed your stay in Abingdon. I will be posting more information on cycling routes from Abingdon over the summer, so if you visit again you can use this as a resource. I looked at your photos of Abingdon and other places — you have a great collection from all over the country and Europe.
Best regards,
Eric
Eric,
I really like the sight and look forward to following it in the future. Always nice to see a different perspective and location on fly fishing. Great site and keep up the good work.

Eric,
After looking through some of your photos and reading your comments, I feel fortunate to have met you this week. You have an obvious talent for capturing the beautiful place we live. I hope to see you both in fly tying class and on the water.

James,
Thanks for your comments about the site. Glad to meet you, too, and I have appreciated your help in the fly tying classes we’ve taken. Regards, Eric
